Microsoft has announced a delay for its highly anticipated Fable reboot, originally slated for release this year, now set for 2026. The delay is intended to allow the development team "more time" to refine the game.
Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, shared this news during the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast. While acknowledging the disappointment for fans, Duncan reassured listeners that the delay would result in a game worth the wait. "I have absolute confidence in the Playground team and what they are bringing to the Fable franchise," he said. "We’re bringing amazing gameplay, British humor, and a beautifully reimagined version of Albion that remains faithful to the series, but with Playground's own unique take."
Duncan emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of both the game and the development team, ultimately aiming to deliver the best experience to the community.
In the same podcast, Duncan revealed some pre-alpha footage of the game, showcasing the progress made so far, including striking environments and snippets of combat. He also shared his own hands-on experience with the game, describing his time playing through city elements, quests, combat sequences, and even a boss battle, all of which he found "amazing." "I’ve seen a lot more than that, and I’m very excited," Duncan added. "Take my word for it, but I hope what we’ve shown here can spark excitement among the community."
The Fable reboot, announced in July 2020, is being developed by Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon.
