Understanding the Features of Series-Connected Battery Systems

Stacked series batteries, also known as series-connected battery systems, are widely used in applications where higher voltage output is required. By connecting individual battery cells in series, the overall voltage increases while the capacity in ampere-hours (Ah) remains the same as that of a single cell. This configuration has distinct characteristics that make it suitable for various energy storage and power supply applications.

One of the primary characteristics of stacked series batteries is increased voltage output. When batteries are connected in series, the voltages of each cell add together. For example, connecting four 3.2V LiFePO4 cells in series produces a total voltage of 12.8V. This characteristic is essential in applications such as electric vehicles, solar power systems, and backup power supplies, where higher voltage is necessary to drive equipment efficiently.

Another important feature is constant current capacity. In a series configuration, all cells share the same current, meaning the overall current capacity is limited by the weakest cell in the stack. Therefore, the uniformity and quality of each cell are critical to maintaining optimal performance and preventing premature degradation.

Battery management and safety are also key characteristics. Series-connected batteries often require a battery management system (BMS) to monitor individual cell voltages, prevent overcharging or over-discharging, and maintain balance across all cells. This ensures longer lifespan, stable performance, and safe operation.

Additionally, stacked series batteries offer flexibility in energy design. By adding or removing cells, users can customize the voltage level for specific applications without changing the overall system architecture. However, careful design is required to ensure thermal management and prevent imbalance among cells.
